Description
All nut hulls contain tannin, which is a mordant, so you don't need to mordant the yarn with alum. The longer you soak the hulls, the more color - -- certainly days, even weeks or a month. Outside in a covered pail is best. There's likely to be enough color in the dye to use it more than once, with second and third dyeings being lighter and making a very nice range/family of shades. Pour the dye liquor off the hulls to use it; if you like, add fresh water to the hulls and soak some more to see if there's any more dye left. Use a non-reactive vessel (enamel with no chips, stainless steel). One dyer I know uses galvanized buckets, don't recall that they changed the color of the dye. Simmer the yarn in the dye for about an hour, let it cool at least overnight in the dye, rinse well and wash. An iron kettle or after-mordanting with iron will gray and darken the color. Try using at least the same weight of hulls and yarn, or 2x or even 3x the weight of the yarn. Once the hulls are dry, you can keep them for years in a brown paper bag.
