Description
Neon Gas offered by usis a very inert element and forms an unstable hydrate. In vacuum discharge tube, neon glows reddish orange. Present in the atmosphere as 1 par, of all rare gases, the discharge of neon is most intense at ordinary voltages & currents. Present to a small extent in the atmosphere, it is obtained as a by-product from liquefaction & separation of air and is commercially made available in cylinders under pressure.
Usage:
- Neon is used in making neon advertising signs that accounts for its largest use
- Used to make high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes & TV tubes
- Neon & helium are used in making gas lasers
Refrigeration Application:
- Liquid neon is an economical cryogenic refrigerant
- It has over 40 times more refrigerating capacity per unit volume than liquid helium & more than three times to that of liquid hydrogen
- It is compact, inert & less expensive than helium
