Description
Liquid Argon Gas (Ar) is a monatomic, colourless, odourless, tasteless & nontoxic gas that is present in atmosphere at concentration of just under 1 (0.934%) by volume. A member of a special group of gases known as "rare," "noble," or "inert" gases, these are monatomic gases with totally filled outermost shell of electrons. Further, these also have the ability to chemically interact with other materials that are extremely weak. All members of this group also emit light when electrically excited. Argon also produces a pale blue-violet light.

Specifications:

  • Argon's normal boiling point is very cold -302.6°F (-185.9°C)
  • The gas is approximately 1.4 times as heavy as air & is slightly soluble in water
  • Argon's freezing point is only few degrees lower than its normal boiling point of -308.8°F (-199.3°C)

Features:

  • Argon is valued for its total inertness particular at high temperatures
  • Argon is used in critical industrial processes like manufacturing of high quality stainless steel & production of impurity-free silicon crystals for semi-conductor manufacturing
  • Argon is also used as inert filler gas for light bulbs & as dry, heavier-than-air-or-nitrogen filler for space between glass panels in high-efficiency multi-pane windows
  • It is most abundant of truly inert or "rare" gases
  • It is produced, most commonly, in conjunction with manufacturing of high purity oxygen using cryogenic distillation of air

Argon recovery and purification process:

  • Taking a "side-draw" stream from primary air separation distillation system at point in the low-pressure column where concentration of argon is highest
  • Processing feed in crude argon column that returns nitrogen to low pressure column & produces crude argon product
  • Warming crude argon & reacting (typically about 2%) oxygen impurity in stream with a controlled amount of hydrogen to form water
  • Removing water vapour by condensation & adsorption
  • Re-cooling gas to cryogenic temperature
  • Removing remaining non-argon components (small amounts of nitrogen & unconsumed hydrogen) through further distillation in pure argon distillation column
