Garcinia cambogia is a popular weight loss supplement. It is extracted from a tropical fruit of the same name, also known as the Malabar tamarind.
The fruit was traditionally used to add a sour flavor to meals, but has now become popular for its effects on weight loss. In the skin of the fruit is a large amount of a natural, biologically active substance called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA). This is the active ingredient in garcinia cambogia, and has been shown to cause weight loss in several studies . Garcinia cambogia extract is currently the world’s most popular weight loss supplement.
How Does Garcinia Cambogia Work?
Many studies have been done on garcinia cambogia, in both animals and humans. It has been shown to affect appetite and weight regulation in two ways:
Fat Production: It blocks the fat-producing enzyme Citrate lyase. This makes it harder for the body to produce fat.
Cravings: It increases levels of the hormone serotonin in the brain. This can theoretically lead to reduced appetite and fewer cravings.
Whatever the mechanism is, animal studies on garcinia cambogia repeatedly show that it causes major weight loss and reductions in belly fat .It also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, reduces inflammation and improves antioxidant status.
Other Health Benefits
Garcinia cambogia has mainly been studied as a weight loss supplement, but it may also have other health benefits. For example, one study showed that it can reduce LDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides and raise HDL (the “good”) cholesterol. It was also shown to reduce belly fat in one study. This is the harmful fat around the organs that causes disease.
However, keep in mind that the evidence is mixed. Higher quality studies are needed. It is recommended to get a brand that contains 50% or 60% hydroxycitric acid.
Here’s how to take garcinia cambogia:
